History
Basketball is a collective sports game invented in 1891 by Canadian Physical Education teacher James Naismith at the Springfield Christian Association of Boys, Massachusetts, United States.
The game is played by two teams of 12 players (5 on the field and 7 substitutes) whose objective is to pass the ball into an opponent's basket and prevent it from entering our basket, placed at the ends of the field, either in a gym or outdoors.
Players can walk on the field, with possession of the ball as long as they dribble (hit the ball against the ground) with each step taken.
In December 1891, Professor James Naismith, received a task from his principal, who proposed to him to create a sport in which the students could practice in an enclosed place, because the winter used to be very severe, which prevented the practice of Baseball or of American Football.
James Naismith soon discarded a game that used his feet or had a lot of physical contact, as they could become very violent due to the characteristics of a gymnasium, closed space and with wooden floors.
Until 1992, the rules of basketball at the Olympic Games excluded the participation of professional teams, which left NBA players out of the competition. Thus, the United States team was formed by athletes from university teams. From that year, however, everything changed. The team that would represent the land of Uncle Sam at the Barcelona Games had so many stars that it earned the nickname Dream Team, that is, Dream Team. The wages of its twelve members were also far from a nightmare: together, they earned $ 73 million a year. The first goal scored by the team was from Larry Bird, with a win of 136 x 57 points against Cuba.
